How much would it cost to follow Joanna Lumley on her Silk Road to China, and how far has David Attenborough travelled over a lifetime?
From city trips to safaris, we’ve followed the footsteps of nine famous TV travel stars, tracking how many countries they’ve been to, how many miles they’ve racked up along the way, and the total cost of their trips over time.
Analysing data from every series the stars have appeared in, we’ve also worked out the most expensive one they’ve featured in, along with the number of trips they’ve taken in total.
David Attenborough has travelled 1.9 million miles, the equivalent of flying around the earth 763 times
Attenborough’s Life on Earth Series would cost £51,874 if you wanted to visit every country on the list
Collectively the travel stars have visited 134 (68%) of the world’s 195 countries

To conduct the analysis, we started by analysing the IMDb profiles of nine of TV’s biggest names in travel. Scanning the listed series, we noted down each and every individual location they’d visited using the episode synopses – if someone was listed as a narrator and not a presenter (as is often the case with David Attenborough) we assumed they didn’t travel to the country for that particular episode / series.
Using this data, we then got price data for flights (accurate as of November, 2019) to work out the cost to fly to each location, assuming a London start and end point. For accuracy, we’ve assumed that concurrent episodes within the same series were filmed one after the other, so the host would fly from London to Paris and then onto Tokyo, for example, before flying home. Standalone episodes have been priced at the cost of a round trip.
Note: We were unable to account for domestic travel within a country as this would likely have been arranged privately. For distances of over 100km, we’ve assumed hosts would travel by plane and have priced flights accordingly (this is often the case with interstate travel in America).
